Mother's Day

Mother's Day

Mother's Day is an opportunity to pay extra attention to your mother. In Sweden, Mother's Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in May every year, but in other countries the celebration may take place on other days. The origin of Mother's Day being included in our almanac actually comes from the United States. Ann Jarvis, a woman who, during the American Civil War in the late 19th century, cared for wounded soldiers, had started something called Mother's Day Work Clubs focusing on health issues. Her daughter, Anna Jarvis, introduced Mother's Day in 1905, as a day to honor all mothers because she believed that a mother is the one who does the most for one in life. Today mothers are often celebrated with children having drawn a picture, baked a cake or something else, depending on the child's age. Small children usually have their fathers help, so they learn to celebrate Mother's Day.

I think it is important that even today we pay attention to all mothers who stand up for their children through thick and thin. In addition to everything that is done in everyday life with cooking, washing, washing dishes, helping the children with homework and the like, a mother often does those invisible things that no one thinks about. It can be things like making the bed extra cozy, puffing up the pillows and straightening the stuffed animals. A mother usually remembers which food the child has as a favorite dish and cooks it, for example, on the child's birthday. When a child is a little hangry, the mother takes it in her lap, reads a fairy tale, hugs - only that feeling and security can make a small child feel better. Mothers organize birthday parties, fix everything from gym clothes to remembering to buy presents for the child's friends when they have a party. Mother and child can bake and do crafts together, or something else that creates a community. I think it is important to pay attention to Mother's Day, not only when you are a small child, but also as an adult you can continue to show appreciation for everything your own mother has done.

Mother's Day, why we celebrate it, when and how it originated

Mother's Day was introduced in the United States in 1905 and then we brought the custom here to Sweden. The idea is to recognize all mothers for everything they do for their children.
