The high content of chromium and nickel gives the steel protective properties against corrosion or rust. For the steel to become stainless, at least 10.5% of its weight must consist of chromium.
Identify stainless steel

Stainless steel and aluminum alloy may look very similar to each other, but they have big differences in terms of properties. A common way to find high-quality stainless steel is to look for the "stainless steel" label on the product. Since products made of stainless steel are often in a slightly higher price range, the manufacturer usually demonstrates that the product is made of stainless steel with this marking.
Magnetism and appearance
Stainless steel is in principle always non-magnetic, except when special alloys are included in the material. To find out if a product is made of stainless steel, you can hold a magnet to it. If the magnet does not stick, this can be a clear sign that it is made of stainless steel. You can also inspect the product visually. Stainless steel has a silver gray color with a polished or brushed surface. This varies slightly depending on whether the product has a surface treatment or not, but with a little experience you can easily tell the difference.
Weight and acid test
A clear sign that a product is made of stainless steel is its weight. Stainless steel is a relatively dense material. You can lift the product and feel if it feels extra heavy based on its size, in which case it is a sign that it is made of stainless steel. Acid testing is another method that can give a clear indication, but of course it should not be used on valuable products. By dropping a little vinegar on a part of the product, you can see if it causes a reaction, such as discoloration or sizzling. Stainless steel is acid resistant and does not react to this test.
