Which countries have silver as a natural resource?

Which countries have silver as a natural resource? Silver is a very popular metal that is important in many different industries. The metal is also widely used in the manufacture of jewelery and is significantly cheaper than, for example, white gold or platinum. At the same time, it is a precious metal and silver jewelry can last for many generations.

It is estimated that man began to mine silver around 5000 BC. Researchers also believe that shortly afterwards the metal began to be used to make jewellery. But where does silver actually come from? In which countries is the metal found as a natural resource?

Which countries have the most silver?

Silver occurs as a natural resource in many different countries. However, it is far from everyone who has larger quantities or a developed silver production. The fact that a country has large resources of silver does not necessarily mean that the metal is also mined on a large scale.

The countries that are at the top in terms of the natural resource silver are below:

  • Peru
  • China
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Mexico
  • Australia

In Peru, there are estimated to be about 98,000 MT, that is, metric tons, of the metal. That's more than any other country has. In addition, large quantities are mined and therefore have a significant silver industry. In 2022, the figure amounted to 3100 MT.

In China there are about 71,000 MT of silver and in Poland about 65,000 MT. At the same time, Poland mines relatively small amounts in relation to the resources it has. In 2022, China mined around 3400 MT, while Poland accounted for 1300 MT. The USA, Bolivia and Canada also have large amounts of silver.

Is there silver in Sweden?

Silver is also found as a natural resource in Sweden, but occurs only in small amounts and is usually mined as a by-product. The metal can be found, for example, in Sala, Gällivare, Lycksele and Skellefteå. The mines in Askersund, Hedemora and Lindesberg also mine silver. Since the amounts involved are small, Sweden imports silver from other countries.
